| | Caricature Presentation I just returned from giving a presentation on some of my caricature collection.
It was sponsored by the Kitsap carvers club and they do have a terrific club; the club house isn't anything special, but the members are really nice.
I selected fifty caricatures from my collection, with carvings ranging from 1919 to 2003. Most of the well known carvers were represented, with the exception of Emil Janel and Andy Anderson.
Although you may find it hard to believe, I am not much of a talker; I can write up a storm, but talking to large groups is tough for me.
Still, I believe the club members enjoyed my presentation and especially the question and answer session that followed. I asked everyone to handle the carvings if they wished, it is difficult to really appreciate a carving if you can't touch it.
This is the first time any part of my collection has been seen in a public venue.
It was rewarding to share my collection with folks who truly appreciate them.

| | Re: Caricature Presentation Well done Rick! It is nice of you to attend and "spread the word" on the background of the art form. Have you ever considered putting together a video on your collection....in the form of a presentation?
Don't underestimate the value....historic, not monitary....of your collection. By the way of recording a visual record of the pieces and whay you know of their background and history, you preserve that for postarity. That video could be a great record and a great aid for art colleges to use as a teaching tool. I'm serious. Don't forget, caricature is an American art form, and you my friend, are one of the most knowledgable people in the country on the subject. Don't underestimate your value and the value of your knowledge, in the art.
Think about it. Please.

| | Re: Caricature Presentation Rick I know from my experience that you are absolutly right. You cant appreciate a carving untill you touch it. I like to feel the chisel and knife marks and some how I can imagine the artist as he or she carved it. Funny thing every time I do a presentation or show the kids want to touch and feel my carvings. Mothers and Fathers always jump on the children and tell them not to touch. I always tell them to let the children touch the carvings pick them up they cant hurt them they are made from wood. I am sure the club got a real education from your presentation I only wish I could have been there to for the experience. Oh well one day

That was mighty nice of you, and what a lucky bunch of people. Wow, fifty carvings.
Bob is right, only I think a book would be easier, but I have mentioned that before.
In fact; I was just looking at a Trygg carving on e-bay, and I clicked on a link to Trygg history and Little Shavers is listed in the expert sources right alond with H. Refsal and Roger Schroeder of WCI. That proves you are some kind of spurt, and they have books.

| | Re: Caricature Presentation Ed,
Yes, I did take three of my own carvings.
One was the two hobos looking at the pie in the window.
A hobo cooking dinner.
The last carving was a sailor in dress whites, liberty cuffs turned up, holding a pool cue.
Sorry, have never taken a picture of it.

| | Re: Caricature Presentation Rick of all the photos of carvings i have seen that you own.
the pie in the window. and the hobo dinner are my favorite ones, or the ones I like the most, they are self explanitory.
the expression, shows the hopes of a free dinner or dinner at last had to be amoung a hobos highest daily wishes, especally where there was a challange they could brag about..... | | Thread Tools | | | | Display Modes | Linear Mode |
