Default add on appendages

I feel its fine to add on any appendage, look at the books by Bill Higginbotham.

Here's my opinion for what it's worth (nothing). It's my carving and I'll do what I darned will please and if somebody doesn't like it - tough!

I referenced this thread for another reason earlier and realized that I missed Andre's response way back when......

If you look at the material he references, this is the same principle that I use when "teaching" how to draw patterns for caricature. The material is for "realistic" drawing, but can easily be altered for caricature once you understand the principles.

It's well worth the visit, even though it is a bit long.

Tim,

If you look at how they glue up blocks when they're going to carve a carosel horse it will give you some ideas on how to add thickness to certain areas to allow for arms, legs, or whatever pieces need to extend outside the normal wood block dimensions.

If you have a jointer or are good with a hand plane you should be able to create a great gluing edge that will be nearly undetectable in the final carving.

Ivan Whillocl has an artical in one of the back issues of carving mag. on characture dementions. I did an add on tail on a mtn. lion used the wrong glue had to paint it.
