| | Caricature classes - Wolfe/Falin Not so much an advertisement as an opportunity.....
If anyone is interested in a mini-vacation, Tom Wolfe and Gary Falin will be having a 5 day class (2 1/2 days each) in Tom's shop on Grandfather Mountain NC.
It's scheduled from August 16-20th.
I say "vacation" as the shop is in one very nice location for site-seeing.
From my understanding, there are a few "slots" open.
I can put any interested people in touch with Tom.
Ususally, the carver has a selection from rough outs provided by each of the instructors. |

| | Re: Caricature classes - Wolfe/Falin I have carved a few of Gary's rough outs over the past month and got them painted this weekend (along with the "old man caricature" examples in the other thread).
Anyway, thought I'd post them here for reference.
I did slip a hobo into the picture that's my own design, but the others are Gary's..

You did a great job on those carvings. I was wondering how did you finish or seal these carvings? Thanks,

| | Re: Caricature classes - Wolfe/Falin Chipper,
Most of these were just washed, painted (acrylic) and dipped in Boiled Linseed Oil (BLO). I will coat them with a polyurethane (satin) in a couple of days. I do use multiple coats of color - especially on the faces - to get some tone variation.
The hobo was actually dipped in Minwax before painting. It sealed the wood and the paint does not absorb into the wood as in the others. Again, I use multiple layers of paint. I really like the effect of the "pre-treated" piece, but it's an extra step - and I've said it before - that I skip many times because I'm lazy. I have many pieces that don't even get painted because I just don't like finishing them. The enjoyment (for me) is actually CARVING.
Sorry - got off topic.
The paint on the pretreated hobo stays on the surface more and can be "knocked off" with a little rubbing. I do this with a paper towel after the paints dried and then seal with a coat of polyurethane. I dry brushed some white on his hair after the rub down and before the polyurethane coat. It's a little heavier than normal (for me), but for some reason, it looked better heavier on this little fellow.
I recommend that you (generally - anyone) try different painting/finishing techniques to see what you like. Carve a few simple pieces, and try different combinations to evaluate how they look. It's hard to tell from that picture - especially since they are different carvings/colors, etc, but it does make a difference. | | Thread Tools | | | | Display Modes | Linear Mode |
