| | | What is a Caricature Carving? What do you consider a caricature carving? Does it need to be a cartoon type character or, anything that isn't based on a real person?
Myself, I kind of feel that there are more than one type. Enlow's Hillbilly characters are one type and woodspirits are another. |

| | | Re: What is a Caricature Carving? I have carved caricature based on a known individual, caricature based on exaggerated realisim, and even caricature which would fit better into the description of cartooning.
In my opionion, Caricature doesn't need to resemble any one person, it can be a caricature of a type of person.
I carve mostly hobos; where exaggerating their clothes and actions is a big part of the caricature. Since hobos are basically clowns without makeup, and most are older men, it is relatively easy to exaggerate features. |

| | | Re: What is a Caricature Carving? That's kind of what I was getting at. Lot's of things are caricatures. The main thing was that I wondered why more people didn't post on this part of the forum, if a lot of people where carving caricatures. Just kind of curious. |

| | Re: What is a Caricature Carving? You bring up a good question Butch. I recently entered a Santa in a competition under the Caricature category. When I went to see the carvings, there were Santas in the 'Human Figure' category. I thought that mine was a caricature because is wasn't 'realistic' looking. Maybe I was in the wrong category. ???

| | | Re: What is a Caricature Carving? Butch, my definition of a caricature is the exaggeration of a realistic feature
that is distinctive to that particular subject but not a distortion of it.

I thinks so too but, I also think that carvings like the old fisherman in the upper left hand of your computer screen is also a caricature.
That's kind of what I meant when I said woodspirits are a caricature. Usually there isn't any exaggeration in the carving of spirits ( altho, sometime there is a lot ).
To me, there are cartoon caricatures and, there are caricatures such as Old World Santas or the Old Fisherman.
If you do animal carvings, you do either realistic or caricature. Not much in between.
My opening post was kind of a question as to why there wasn't more postings on the caricature board.
Just kind of curious as to what different opinions on the subject are. |

| | | Re: What is a Caricature Carving? Different Clubs have different rules. Most clubs have Santas and Woodspirts in mythical charactors if they are carved in the round. If carved in bark They may be in a special category for bark carving. If carved in relief it's in relief.
Hope this helps you out.

| | | Re: What is a Caricature Carving? I guess that's kind of why I stear clear of clubs, competitions, shows, etc. Somebody's always trying to stick you in some category or other. I say just carve what you feel like and to heck with everybody else if they like it o.k. if they don't that's o.k. too. |

| | | Re: What is a Caricature Carving? Eddy,
This kind of went the wrong way. I was just curious, for my own sake, what people called what. I really wasn't trying to start anything. Sorry if that's the way anybody took it. | | Thread Tools | | | | Display Modes | Linear Mode |
