Hi, I've been ghosting here for some time since Gene Messer recommended this site to me and I've learned a lot from you all, thank you. I was looking for patterns and found Caricature carvers Showcase and wondered if it was worth buying or if you might suggest another book that would be better for a beginner - I'm particularly looking for a fisherman pattern. Any advice would be greatly appreciated, Thank you, Brendan |

Theres a good one about an old sea captain and his two mates. They're not a hard carve, and like all pieces, you learn things. Look for the book with the old sea captain wearing the yellow slicker. Hope this helps, and welcome aboard. |

Brendon, The Caricature Carvers showcase is unique in that there are many different styles of caricature carving in it. Lots of inspiriation in the expanded gallery up front. It's followed by nearly 100 pages of one page finished carving opposing is the pattern and lots of tips. I really like it. My 2 cents worth, Doug

Brendon, I think this book is a little advanced for a beginner. It was meant for patterns, but a lot of them are done on an angle, so it really throws you off when trying to cut out your pattern on the band saw. You want one with some pages of pictures of a step by step method to get to your final carving. Fox Chapel has a lot of great books that are good for beginners. Some of the Youtube tutorials are a great place to start also. good luck, Tom |

Thank you very much. I have come across the book JD Jim mentioned in my searches so I'll go back and try it. I have been watching as many carvers as I can find on YouTube and have subscribed to them all, they make it look a lot easier than it is but I'm slowly learning to think in three dimensions. I am conscious of trying to run before I can walk but when I lift a knife I soon get slowed down again. I will look at the books you suggest, thank you again for your help. (Why did I only discover two super pastimes, carving and woodturning, when I retired?) Brendan |

Hi Brendan This link here will let you see a lot of the pages inside the book. Caricature Carvers Showcase: 50 of ... - Google Books If you want a pattern for the Fisherman that Gene has done on his Youtube tutorial you can pause the frame where he's holding the pattern (use full screen mode) then press "print screen" on your keyboard. That'll capture the image on the 'clipboard'. just paste the image into whatever picture editing program you use. If it's any help I've already done that and could email you a PDF file. I've reduced the figure to 6". cheers Simon
