what kind of finish do you use? I use "Deft" , puts an even appearance to the carving.

Hello SmallJawz,
I have never attached a picture but will try it here for the first time. I also use light washes of acrilic Delta Ceramcoat paints. Then finish with a clear saten coat of Deft.
Keep up the good work....Myron

Very nice work.

My carving is 8" tall is yours full size 11" or so?

What do you use to get the skin color?

Thanks

Those are some nice carvings.

I have the honor of owning the original by Marv Kaisersatt; so it is fun to see renditions by other carvers.

Many thanks Hi Ho Sliver,

Smalljawz you ask about skin color. It seems like I never use the same thing twice. I believe for the most part I use Medium Flesh by Delta Ceramcoat. I think you will find that the painting is just as much fun as the carving. I have been at it for about 10 years and just love it.
The Deft spray is called Defthane Clear Satin. When dried it will not shine at all.... Happy Carving....Myron

Nice work. If you're interested in the way I mix flesh here it is.

Red Iron Oxide
Yellow Ochre

I paint on a pane of glass. Glass is the best surface for mixing acrylics. It lets you see just how transparent your washes are. Make sure you wet your figure before you start so you don't get any dry edges. It doesn't have to be soaking just damp.

I squeeze out a little of each and mixed them about equally. Rinse your brush out and pull a little of the color out of the mixed paint. Dilute it further to a real thin wash before applying. Remember...you can always add more paint but not necessarily remove it if you get too much. Use a scrap piece of wood to check your mixtures. I always put a little heavier color of the same wash on the back of the cheeks near the eyes and on the nose and lower lip. Not the upper. Only the lower. For some reason it looks better that way.

Squeeze out just a small drop of Midnight Blue. No other Blue will work. Load your brush with water and pull out just a little of that drop. Load up your brush again until you have a spot of water with just a hint of color. Use this to paint the eyelids and area up to the eyebrows. Don't worry about getting this on the eyes as white will cover this thin color.

Use this same wash to paint a five o'clock shadow on the bearded areas of the face.

There you have it. I get kind of long winded but maybe it will help you out. It will take a lot of practice to get it just right but that's the fun of painting.
