For Caricatures, I consider 3x3x10-1/2" to be the optimal size for me.

Once the size gets to 4x4" and over, the carving becomes difficult to hold with one hand.

I don't enjoy being restricted to carving in front of a vise; I like my carvings portable.

Thom.....
I use all kinds of tools. When I start somethin big I use my chainsaw, or grinder or hatchet or a very wide gouge. Most of my work is with cottonwood bark and I use one or two knives and a few hand tools. I have just about every type of power carving tools around. When I'm carving something small like a cowboy bust in basswood. I use my knife and a gouge 1/2 in. wide. starting With a block Want to race some day?
when I want to make a copy, I use one of my own pieces and run it through my duplicarver.
