Best Caricture carver from the past?

As I am about to venture into the caricture carving world I have been doing some studying and reading on the subject and have found many different ideas as to what a true caricture carving is. It seems to me that this would be a good way to get a bar room fight going with a bunch of drunk carvers,Lol. Just jokeing of corse but it sure is strange to me that there are so many great caricture carvings done in so many different styles.
To me the best I have seen and the carvings that really strikes me as perfection in a carvers feeling for caricture's is by Emil Janel.
Rick from Little shavers has the best picture I have seen of Emil's work but for some reason I can't down load it so I found these on the web.This mans carving's just mesmerize me. Mike

Mike,
The carving on the left is titled "Man in a pensive mood" it is located in the American Swedish Institute in Minneapolis, MN. They have the largest known collection of Emil's work. It is actually quite a large carving.

I would have to look up the other one; I know it is in one of my books.
I also have a cutout for it lying around somewhere. I will probably never get around to carving it.

Emil was the best, I could kick myself for not meeting him before he died.

Rick, Thank you for the info on Emil. The picture you have on your web site is just out of this world when it comes to carving an old man and capturing that mans feelings or mood.

If you come across the rough out of that carving please save me one. After I try this Hillbilly I would really like to tackle that old man with the walking stick. Thanks , Mike

I would agree. I have held four of his carvings in my little hands.....I didn't want to turn loose of any of them. It's hard to believe how well he could turn a piece of wood into such expression. What's even more amazing is that there is not a lot of extra detail in his carvings, yet it seems that there is nothing missing.

I was also surprised at how he left them roughly carved; he would have trouble with todays carving show judges.

There have been many times when judges have noted on my carving tag that my carving had "fuzzies in the ears".

I wonder if they could see beyond Emil's unfinished cuts and chipped out wood; to see the thought behind the carving.

Emil worked without a pattern or pencil lines; his finished carving was entirely in his mind.

It would have been something to watch that man at work. It makes me wonder just what tools he used.There was an old man around here who was in his 90's before he passed on and his kids have some of his animale carvings, They were all farm animales from his place when he was a kid and all of them were done with nothing but an old pocket knife. why not just save them on your computer

click on the thumbnail pic to view it full size
then righ click
save as (be sure to either save as btmp or jpeg not art)
if you have to save itr as btmp yu can always convert it using most
any photo editing softwarwe or paint to jpeg

once you get all saved and converted to jpeg
delete the btmp pics and have only the jpegs
now save all them to disc guessing you have a CD writer

Big_wayne_p, Already done. I have so many pics on here it's a wonder it doesn't crash,Lol. Saving to CD is great but when you want to send a pic or two on the email you have to download from the disk to do it.
The pictures are really great. Now I'm waiting for my roughout (Hillbillie with a jug) from Rick at Little Shavers. That will be my first caricture carving and I cut 8 more sticks today for wood spirit staffs. Thanks agin, Mike
