I seen a couple of books carving wood eggs. Would like to get them. Are the eggs hard to find?

Thanks, Forrest Skidmore

I'll give Kenny and/or Hi Ho first crack at the answer, to the question, "are wooden eggs hard to find?"

Nah, Just find a wooden Chicken and there ya be!!! Or, I carve a couple of eggs every morning.LOL
Seriously, Most wood carving supply stores have them. Little shavers has them for one. Last time I got a bakers dozen form Rick And Thresea for around 12 bucks. Bet Rick had a hard time getting them from the wooden Chickens.

Of course the wooden Goose eggs are higher price and may be harder to find Wooden Geeses or is that Gooses.

Be sure you get basswood eggs the ones in the hobby stores are mostly birch. I like to carve my own from a square block of basswood. Have done some that I can carve but not 100% smooth egg.

Last time I checked Smoky Mountain Woodcarvers was selling their Hen eggs for $1.00 (I bought a dozen for $11.50) and their Goose eggs for $2.25. Their 4" Ostrich eggs run $6.00 a piece. That might change with their 2009 catalog.

The Mary Finn book is great for just the eye and face sticks alone in my opinion. I also like the Skyler Johson book.

Here is a good place to get eggs, about as cheap as anyone:

I got a couple of eggs from Michaels Arts and Crafts, but I found them to be very hard to carve almost needed a chisel, and my knives were just sharpened, I did a couple of Whimsical Birds from Laura Dunkle's book

I'll get some pics posted later today - I think I'm way overdue to post pics
