Default Another practice session

Still having problems with rounding and removing enough wood but here are 3 more for the practice bin. The tall skinny one was painted over a BLO base coat and I think the main problem was in not having my paint thin enough but I think it looks a tad better than paint on bare wood. It's still fun to try the LeClair methods and he won't have to worry about competition from me.

Personally I think your carving and paint job look really good. I just got Petes book on faces from inter-library loan and am having fun trying to carve them.I notice in the book he uses acrylic for eyes and then goes to oil. I think his u-tube is a little different

I think he uses a different base in each of the books and on the videos. My color perception isn't good enough to see that much difference in any of the methods. He tinted the BLO base with oil sienna paint in the carving from scratch book. I only have acrylic paint which probably won't tint BLO so I used the BLO straight for a base. Pete is a real artist and I have enjoyed watching his work. As he said the whites won't cover well on top of BLO but the base doesn't penetrate the whites if done first. Interesting.

Nah, he doesn't resemble you at all. He's made from a piece of scrap that had split up the right side and I glued it back together, so I named him the village idiot after myself. Been trying to use up all my little scrap pieces and save the good wood for when I learn some more. Been enjoying your little pieces and am amazed at how you get those little details so well.
