He was in the 2nd Connecticut Heavy Artillery Regiment | You know, the 63rd Tennessee, the unit we portray, was actually at Petersburg back in the day. I bet pappy rattled the dugouts over our boys!

| | Re: 63rd Tenn Christmas Ornament Joe...
Some other Billy Yank's did but not my pappy! He was pushing up daisies by the time Ambrose set off that charge. He developed a severe case of dysentery during the march from Cold Harbor to Petersburg, was hauled off to City Point and then shipped to David's Island at New York where he expired from the disease. I found his grave in an family old cemetary up in Connecticut this past spring. By the way, you Johnny Reb's kicked some Yankee butt at Cold Harbor. According to what I found the 2nd CHAR took some of the highest losses of any unit during the charge. My pappy must have found him a pretty large stone to hide behind!
By the way, I tried to snag a pattern from the pictures that you posted but couldn't determine what size chunk of wood you started off with. Care to share?

Care to share? | Well, he started off about 4 1/2" x 2 1/4" x2" and after the wood removal he is 3 7/8" tall x 1 3/8" wide x 1 1/4" thick (back of head to nose.)
Hope this helps! Be sure to post a picture if you make a noggin guy like mine. I would love to see it.
