Youg Boy wants to learn carving

Christofer is 12 years old and lives in Modesto California with his mother who supports the family by working in real estate.
Christofer is a very energetic and likeable young guy whose fater deserted him and his mother several years ago. Christofer told me that he would like to learn how to do wood carving which is approved by his mother.
I am a personal friend of his grandfather who died of cancer earlier this month and would very much like to teach Christofer how to carve, but I live too far away (Over 400 miles)
I would very much suggest that a carving club in the Modesto area take Christofer under their wing and get him started in wood carving. Christofer is in dire need of some solid adult male mentorship.

Thank you Rick for your reply. I am familiar with California Carvers since I am a member. I was already working with them. My message on this site was a concurrent plan B.
