Hi gang.. So my loaded question is two-fold.. What is your method for finishing your basswood carving (type of paint, seal, stain and in what order) plus how are you cleaning up any stain rags, etc? I have a few books on this amazing art form, but the numerous warnings of combustible rags have me a bit paranoid. Thanks in advance for your helpful feedback, hopefully in a couple years I can produce something similar in quality to the great projects ive seen here. Dusty Btw.. My apologies if this question has already been posted.. I'm new to the forum and did a few searches but came up empty. |

WELCOME! Claude gave very good advice about browsing through the finishing section of the site. There's a LOT of experience there, all offered freely. While browsing, think about what kind of finish you want to achieve. Translucent versus opaque? Matte, satin, high gloss? For indoor display or for harsh outdoor elements? Each choice has implications for what materials to use. As for all the combustible rags warnings (and I warn often, having seen the results firsthand), you can relieve your anxiety with one simple rule. If the finish is oil-based, be cautious. Otherwise, don't be frightened away from using whatever finish provides the results you want. Last edited by bob easton; 12-29-2011 at 12:36 PM. |

Dusty, go to the forum mentioned and you'll find a ton of info. As for the rags, do not just toss them when finished. There are two, good, ways to dispose of them. Either put them in an air tight container so no oxygen can get in, or I hang them outside on the clothes line until dry. They still make clothes lines, don' they? Tim
