Default Woodspirit Carving for Beginners

Hi, My name is Jeral & this is my first post!

I'm looking for patterns or tutorials for Wood Spirit Carving. I've been trying to copy from existing wood spirits, but I keep messing up, especially the nose & eyes. Any help would be great! Thanks

I think there is some very good instructional videos here:
http://darkwood-woodcarving.com/free...ng_Lessons.htm

This is a very good place to get you started.

Here's another one:

click on the different pages.

I'm also new to this, one book I recently bought is How To Carve A Woodspirit In A Hiking Stick by Skylar Johnson. Basic straightforward instruction, lots of pictures.

Allen Goodman just made a DVD on carving them - I believe you can get them from Smoky Mountain Woodcarving. He has a distinctive style.

Here's a link:

I just purchased Allen's video and it is great.
www.woodcarvers.com It is so new it is not in the catalog. I happened to be in the store on vacation and saw it.

Highly recommended.
Allen also has a study stick with instructions that helps.

How To Carve A Woodspirit In A Hiking Stick by Skylar Johnson is a great book but it has one very big draw back. It's in B&W and the photographs often do not have enough definition to tell exactly where to carve or how deep.

I like to carve wood spirits in cane staffs and have spent a lot of time on the Internet researching patterns and tutorials.

1. http://www.woodcarvingillustrated.co...lbillyhead.pdf The entire article is living color was featured in the Summer 2003 edition of Woodcarving Illustrated. Excellent photographs

2. http://darkwood-woodcarving.com/Book...sson%20101.pdf Some pictures and diagrams. Very instructional.

3. http://www.oldjoe.org/KeyChainSpirit.html Simple but effective

4. http://www.geocities.com/dfoxcarving/woodspirits.html Again, simple with lots of diagrams
