Post woodcarving vise

Hello All,

I am just beginning carving. Would anyone have any recommendation on any particular vise ? I will be attaching the vise to a work bench.

Thanks

If you look at the article archives I think the poormans carving vise is detailed in issue 5. It works pretty well. I built and modified one which is really remarkably solid.
I have the Jerry Rig vise. It's nice but on the expensive side. I see nice vises on Ebay on a routine basis. If you are patient you can get good deals there. That professional one for 25.00 looks like junk to me though.

Good luck,
Dan

I wonder what kind of carving you will do the most? relief carving you could get away with a couple of bar clamps or C clamps. Working smallish pieces in the round maybe a homemade carvers arm gripped by a regular bench vice. There's a million and one ways to secure your piece while you carve.

I made a vise using a trailer ball, actually like it better than my poor mans vise....very solid...for relief, make a Bench hook....
