Default Woodburing for shadows

Since I am a beginner I'm still trying to figure all of this out! Do any of you use woodburners for shadowing in folds of clothing, around beards and hats or anywhere that you want it darker?? I was wondering if this is the best technique, or if a stain or wax would give me that dark effect that I am looking for in creases and folds or where skin meets clothing.

questions...questions!!!!!

Thanks!
Blake

I use both....woodburning and stains, on the same carving. I find burning very useful in accenting the detail of a carving, and with the great books and WCI magazine issue special on burning, there is such a variety of ways to do it. Bird carvers have used burning for years to gain the fantastic detail in their work, I am just learning the possibilities. Staining will do as well, and you can deepen the effects with layers of stain, but it isn't as controllable.

I think a lot of carvers use a very thin wash of burnt/raw umber....................

Hi Blake,

I use woodburning to create hair and fur as well as deepen some of the shawdows. When I'm carving an animal I like to burn the pupils and nose as well. I don't think I could live without my burner now. Exclamatio

Good Luck
