Marci....I think if you still have UPS...you are too close in! You need to find a place out in the boondocks!! My Dad used to say, if he could see the smoke from the neighbors chimney....he was too close! ha haCowboy

Dave, I can't see the smoke from the neighbor's chimney, but that's because it's usually SNOWING SO DARN HARD!!! Actually the sun came out today...first time in a week or more.

Marci,

I'm a Spee-Dee guy, and I'm originally from Thief River, I know exactly what far flung means

Btw, the Spicer shindig is a "Carve in" - $129 3 day weekend at a hotel there. There's more info on the first link I gave you. http://webpages.charter.net/rochcarve/ -- you might try here for info on the Rochester carving show. Seems like a good little get-together. The Parker's Prarie group sounds like your best bet, you should check that out.

Spee Dee huh? I had a sweet heart of a spee dee delivery guy about two years ago. He couldnt get in our driveway because of mud.. so he calls and waited for me to get down there. He knew I had to return a package in exchange for the one he brought. BUT it had to go to UPS store in Alexandria. He took it for me. He was such a blessing that day since we couldnt get out with a vehicle.

As far as neighbors.. as the crow flies they are just over a mile away. As we drive two plus miles since a mile is the driveway. LOL. BUT.. as far as sound travels I found out that "I" cant play my music very loud.. folks heard it at the other end of the lake. Baddddd.. Marci.

Back to the carving clubs. Shellghost I'm sure glad you delurked. I've had an interesting time going through the links you passed on. I'm anxious to become more involved in the craft of carving just from reading how much fun carving groups have and all the things they do. I do think I'll have to pass up the Spicer weekend after the not so good news from the doctor today. Thanks again for the fun and informational links.

And as far as Parkers Prairie.. yes thats not far from me at all. I'm glad you posted that theres groups near by. I'll be in touch. Thank you.

Hi all,
One other listing of clubs you might try is the one on Colwood's (as in wood burners) site: http://www.woodburning.com/clubs

I've belonged to our area club for about 15 years and I've visited a dozen or so across the US. Have joined another 1/2 dozen that are either nearby or they had a workshop I attended. Our dues are a whopping $4.00 per year. If we have workshops, we charge just enough to cover the instructor's charges. We used to have a beginners carving class twice a year, but not lately.

We meet every Tuesday night from 7 to 9. Second Tuesday is our business meeting night and we take turns bringing a carving project for everyone to do. It's usually something simple that can be nearly carved in one night. We, too, have a club library with carving books, go-bys, videos, etc. that can be checked out for free for two weeks at a time.

Carvers are so good to help each other, whether you get classes from them or not. But you usually have to ask for it--we seldom "volunteer" to help you with a carving project--cause not everyone wants help. If you're a "far piece" from carving suppliers, carvers are usually good about letting to try out one of their carving tools so you'll know if you like it and want to order it.

Mostly, carving clubs are just a great place to improve your carving skills and make new friends.

Thanks for the link Donna_T! I went to use the club listing link but it didn't work. But I found it anyway. Here's the correct link:

Default Wood Working Clubs: local update

Excellent!

Not only did I join the Northern Virginia Carvers, which is a pretty good sized club here in Virginia, but I did find the local club here in Manassas!!

The 'Bull Run Carvers' meet here in town once a week! I was able to introduce myself, and talk with the guys for a while last week. It's not exactly a huge club, only 7 or 8 members from what I gather, but the five guys I met last week were nice fellow, and appeared to be good carvers too!

I have no doubt they can teach me a thing or two!

I suggest finding a few people in your area!
