| | Wood Spirits, are there any with no beards? Hi all,
I just picked up a face carving study kit of a wood spirit from Woodcraft. I'm excited to get going on this.
I did some searching to try and find WS's w/o beards.
I was wondering if anyone has done a woman, a younger beardless man, and even child spirits.
I'd like to, after some practice, make some WS's of myself, my wife and children and maybe close friends and associates as gifts. (On edit: I thought it would be amazing to do a WS of my whole family on one stick from the oldest to the youngest, I think I'm on a mission now, to bad idea's come faster that skills and patience).
I'd love to see spirits that others may have conjured up that are not of the older kindly wizard look for idea's and a starting of point.
As always I look forward to hearing from any of you,
Ayden

| | Re: Wood Spirits, are there any with no beards? You can do a search of this forum using "female" "wood" "spirit" as key words and you'll get 6 hits. You could also go directly to this one: Female WS and Male WS
When you're looking for something, the archives of the forum are a really good place to search.

| | Re: Wood Spirits, are there any with no beards? Irishman has done some great female wood spirits that you should take a look it. You can probably look in the carver galleries for his work. If not, give a look under works in progress.

| | Re: Wood Spirits, are there any with no beards? A wood spirit can be anything you want it to be, Old, young, Bearded or not, Male or female, human, animal, bird, mamal, whatever. Only limited to your imagination.
Whatever you want your wood spirit to be, Go for it. |

| | Re: Wood Spirits, are there any with no beards? Ayden yes there are female woodspririts but they are few and far between. Here one that I carved in a maple tree in Orangeville Ontario. It is so much harder to do a womans face. Men are easy you can cover up all their inperfections with whiskers.

I have done a few faces with leaves for hair and beard below, but you could just do a face of any age or gender surrounded by leaves.
I like to do leaves because I find them easier to do than hair, believe it or not.

| | Re: Wood Spirits, are there any with no beards? Beside all the reasons above. How are they supposed to shave inside that tree?!

___
Claude I apreciate the tip on searching as I was using comma's instead of qoutation marks.
___
Blake I'll be sure to check Irishman's ideas and print them out for reference. Thank you.
___
Colin you're amazing, and thanks so much for the picture. One to print out for sure. My focus will be on cheek bone and nose shapes as they are prominent among Polynesian faces not to mention big expressive eyes.
___
Jim I appreciate the tip on the leaves, it gave me an idea to use plants native to my homeland in New Zealand, primarily the silver fern.
___
Ken, Garon, appreciate the feedback.
Time to check out Irishman's spirits.
Thanks again everyone,

| | Re: Wood Spirits, are there any with no beards? I see that a few of the carvers suggested to have a look at some of my female woodspirits. I tried to attach them again here but the message board will only me to do it once. I'll try putting them in the gallery. I just got started at this 5-6 months ago so please keep searching as I am very much a rookie and always learning. Believe it or not, I find female faces more challenging. The lines and features are much softer and more fussing with the mouth and nose. Its hard not to make them "manly...if I can say that. Good luck and be sure to post when you've carved out a few.

| | Re: Wood Spirits, are there any with no beards? Patrick,
I love the work you have done. I did the search as Claude suggested and reviewed your incredible pictures and work. You ought to be very proud of your work in such a short time.
It would be so cool to see how you will learn to address a womans hair as Colin had done w/ his spirit.
As time becomes available I will study my wife and childrens faces and try to understand what features makes them so unique to each other and learn how to bring out those features in a spirit carving.
Thanks for sharing your pictures and talents w/ us.
