Hi All, I just got CarvingCaricature Figures from Scratch by Pete LeClair and Caricature Carving From Head to Toe by Dave Stetson for Christmas. Does anybody know what size of wood they use for the projects in each of these books? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks, Dave |

Well some where in tha book should have some sizes. .I would say looking at the cover of the book 1.5 square and about 6 inchs tall. Now you can take the width and say it is 1 inch wide take that width and go up to get the tall. I do my own and what ever I feel like or the piece of wood , thats what it is going to be. No one answered you Q so maybe you are in the wrong area. Vin |

Would you believe it's already been asked? Carving caricatures from scratch -LeClair question The influence of Pete LeClair Measurements Question for those who have taken the Pete LeClair classes Well, that's for Pete anyway...... Dave has a pattern in his book, so the wood size should match the pattern(s). Last edited by Mitchell; 12-29-2008 at 12:19 AM. |

Maybe I can help you with the Pete Leclair caricature. I too bought that book when I first started (and it's a great book in my opinion) Like you I couldn't find any specific measurements to go by so here's what I did: In many of the pictures Pete shows his pencil, so I just assumed that it was a typical lead pencil and used that for a scale. Also I figured that Petes hands were average in size and so are mine so here again I used them for scale. After checking several views of his carving I decided that it was about 1-3/4" X 1-3/4" X 8". This was the measurement that I used and it worked out fairly good for me. Here's the final result: |

dave, alot of petes caricatures from scratch are 1 1/4 x1 1/4 x 6" or 1 1/2x1 1/2x6", but like big dave said any size block you have will work as long as it is square, but then again if it isnt that for from being square, i would go ahead and use it,hope this helps bart |

Thank you all for the help. I will order the 1 1/4" x1 1/4" x 6" and see how it goes. Soggy, I hope my first caricature turns out as good as yours did! Thanks again, Dave |

Something you might be interested in, I use a proportioning wheel. Bought mine from Dick Blick Art Supply but just lately found one on the net that is free to use Online Proportion Wheel. you can resize pattern (photo copy out of the book) to fit your available wood or opposite way up or down in size. Makes it easier just plug in numbers. Hope it helps. To GOOD Things for ALL in '09 Happy New Year! BRIAN D.
