where can I find online a source to purchase basswood quilt squares? I'm putting in a search, but don't seem to find it. what "thickness" is best for both carving and wood burning? I'm looking for 4x4 is my understanding but is 1/8" thick ok?

I'd try some scroll saw suppliers. You probably won't find it in 4 x4 sizes, but 12 x 12 should be fairly common and easy to cut down.

Last summer, I started my 11 year old grand daughter out by carving quilt squares. She started out on 2 x 2 inch squares. I used 1/4th inch thick basswood. I personally would not use 1/8 inch thick wood, as I think it tends to warp. I believe Itasca wood products carries 1/4 inch basswood. Tom H

You can give www.walllumber.com a try if you are not opposed to mail order. He sells thin lumber and having bought some recently, the basswood is nice wood. It will be random widths and lengths. Hope this will help some.

It all depends on how deep you want to carve, 1/8" is awful thin, not that it can't be carved though, its just really easy to put a knife through and tends to split real easy (personal experience), its fine for woodburning though. Personally I would'nt carve anything thinner than 3/8", my favorite thickness is 3/4" wood as far as wood quilt squares go. You pretty much get it from any lumber or basswood supplier. Susan Irish had a thread where some of us did quilt squares. If I find the thread I'll post it for you. Mel |

I got some a number of years ago from Don Wedl http://woodsource.tripod.com/ they are 3x3x1/4 I do hear of others 4x4 but none less that 1/4...they will warp some even at 1/4..........actually, if I were to get anymore I would ask for at least 3/8 I think...imho

According to the Wood Quilt Square link, Irish used 4/4 basswood.
