I just ran a search for "carving classes durham UK and came up with this site.
http://www.pcrrn.co.uk/rjames/about.htm

As he mentioned a class at a local school, you might contact him to see if they are still in operation.

Glyn.....not sure about Durham, but I see classes advertized in the British magazine "Wood Carving". I'll take a look through the issues that I have and if I see one for Durham I'll pass it on.

Try emailing Peter Penson, who is chairman of the British Woodcarvers Assoc. I'll bet he can tell you if there's anyone in your area. Bencarve@aol.com is his email address. He lives at Laindon Common, Little Burstead, Essex.

Regardless, welcome to our message board. Hope you find help with carving in your neighborhood.

i live in birmingham u.k and our local college has carving courses so you could check out local education colleges in co durham to see if they do anything there too.Good luck coz once you get into carving it will bring plenty of pleasure, alas in England woodcarving doesnt seem to be as popular as in the states ect.I have been carving for nearly 30 years and was lucky to have a great teacher in my moms uncle,he was taught by his father too so it goes way back in my family.
