Hi Dave, Your thought on a lag bolt is a good and cheap one. The only difference between the two will be that the carvers screw has deeper threads than the lag screw. I would give it a try.

Weld on a butterfly nut may work. I know Lee Valley sells them in Canada, so I would imagine you might find one at Woodcrafters or some such. Your temporary/jury rig might work for a while, until you could find a proper one. Depends on how good you are at welding??? Smile Bob

I used a hanger bolt when I needed a temporary helper. They already have lag bolt type threads on one end and machine threds on the other end. Do a google search "hanger bolt", I think they're used mostly in the furniture industry. In fact you probably have 4 of them under your dining room table holding the legs on. You could remove one of them to try it out, just let your wife know that she now has a 3 legged table. :>) Bob |

They also make double-ended lavatory (toilet) bolts; lag on one end, machine thread on the other. They are a smaller size, though; around 1/4"-diameter. For the kinds of work you are doing, that might be too small! Bob |

Another simple alternative is a big eye screw - the type you would screw into a rafter to hang something heavy from. Get a big flat washer and slip it on and glue it in place with JB Weld. All these things are at the hardware store for very little $. A small metal working vise will hold it best, plus they typically can swivel then lock securely.

Maybe I'm wrong, an I have been wrong before, it looks like the nut on the handle is going to be hitting the carvings mounting surface before it will tighten down the carving.

Rog, I don't think many people would screw that far into the wood. You normally just screw in far enough to hold tight. Bob |
