Not that I am the one to give advice, but I have found in my case that doing something for practice is for the birds. I have to have an interest in a subject to ge me the greatest chance of success. With that interest in there I am more likely to push through those difficult times that I know will come, if it does not work out then bin it and move on. Relief carving at this stage does not interest me, so that fails my test, Caricatures were of interest, and I tried a few bottle stoppers, do not need any more, so that fails my test now too. Santas and Christmas and Holiday carvings showed some appeal, but I and my family have all the decorations we need, so thats a fail too. Carving animals show promise, esspecially those I can make half real and half caricature. I find I can do animals a lot easier than humans, I enjoy the challenge, I prefer in the round, so that ticks that box. I want to try something larger where I can use a chainsaw to get started, an Arboteck mini grinder and some heavy duty power grinding, but not the sixe of a Totem Pole. Something that is big enough but I can lift and move from one place to another even if it is a bit heavy. If I do not have a reason to do something then I know I will have no reason to start. I have a need to see what I have accomplished and have a place to put it. After I have put a few things on the shelf I have found it time to move on and put something larger on our deck. to blend in with the outside world. But more importantly for me carving is the journey not the destination. Once you have your eyes opened for you by the good people here, you will soon start to see opportunities where others see difficulties. But to me, I have to have a real interest in the subject, but I suspect so do you otherwise you would not be here. Good luck Pete |
