Default Which way should I go George?

I have a decent amount of chisels, knives, etc. and am new to carving.
I'v done a lot of reading about carving - but need to get out of my "research" rut and START DOING SOMETHING!

So, what's your opinion on the "best" technique to begin with?

A. Chip
B. Relief (either shallow or deep)
C. In-the-Round
D. Other (you decide)

I look forward to your feedback!!

Thanks,

Glenn

I started with simple, shallow relief such as flowers etc. Then I started going deeper and deeper and eventually you will transition to "in the round". As one forum member, Robson Valley, I think said A carving in the round is just 2 relief carvings back-to-back. Just have fun with it.

Spread all your tools out on a table. Walk out of the room. Count to ten. Go back into the room and pick up the tool that most interests you.
If it's a knife, start in the round. If it's a gouge, start a relief.
Either way, just start.

Which do you think interests you the most?
Which do you think you would enjoy doing the most?
How much space do you have? not really important unless you want to do full size in the round /high relief
I have tried all forms except for high relief. I prefer chip carving ( but there is a great deal of time involved in some with drawing the patterns and in the round ( trying to get the hang of caricatures)......
Then, there is always the one you do to "get away" from it all........spoons.

I would get a piece of wood and a sharp knife and just start doing stop cuts. Just whittle! Or jump right in and just start carving. See what you can do with each tool. Just have fun and don't expect a masterpiece from yourself right off the get go. You can procrastinate for years and not get anything done, speaking from my own experience!
