Greetings, I am a beginning carver and purchased a copy of Tom Wolfe's book "Carving Santas for Today". I don't think I have the appropriate gouge for hollowing out eye cavities. What size/depth works best (before I invest in another tool). And do most carvers make use of eye punches? Skip |

Skip, I think you are better off learning how to carve eyes, rather than using a punch. The problem with compressing wood. is that when you paint, it sometimes swells back up, and you lose the detail that you thought you would end up with. Lynn Doughty has videos on how to do eyes on his cowboy head turorial, and Don Mertz at the www.woodbeecarver.com also shows how to do them. Probably even some youtube videos on how to do eyes. Good luck, Tom |

What tool do you have??? I like 1/4" #9 and 1/8" #11 for versatility and getting into such areas as eye recesses. There has been many discussions already on eye punches. I'll try to link one of the better... Here it is: Eye gouge Punch Last edited by Mitchell; 08-06-2011 at 07:00 PM. |
