Default Which chisels to use with a mallet

Hey gang,

Are most wooden handle chisels (not palm I guess) designed to be used with a mallet also, or only the ones with steel at the ends of the handle?

Thanks all..... wheezer

For what it's worth, I've used a mallet on my Flexcut palm chisels. I didn't hit hard or try to take off a lot of wood, though. When I need to have very good control over the cut, a few gentle taps with the mallet on a palm tool will give me the control I need and won't hurt the gouge.

I have done the same thing as you Claude, another option is to buy a soft head mallet Woodcraft, Rockler, Lee Valley and Woodcarverssupply all sell them. Some tools are better designed to take the pounding and thats why they are called mallet tools . That bit of steel at the butt end is too keep the wooden handle from mushrooming over do to heavy mallet use. A soft head mallet will counter that problem.
