Question Whats Best

My son is going through the police academy starting Monday the 19th.
I would like to make him a custom grip for his Ruger 22 revolver, that he has had for a while.
just a little something to comemerate this occasion, and to be handed down to my grandchildern ( some day maybe ).

Anyway I would like some suggestions to what kind of wood would be good for such thing.

I was thinking about Diamond wood. Any thoughts?????

Jimbo,

Look through the search function for historic posts showing grips that Mark Y. has done. If I'm not mistaken there is a wicked-cool custom case involved, too.

What a cool, nice idea, being the mom of a cop! I bet he will really treasure it. Show a picture when you get it done, or while you're carving it.

Since Mark mentioned Cocobolo, I'll suggest Zebra wood. Are you thinking of going the full custom route with thumb rest, etc.?
Another beautiful streaked wood is Verawood"Mararcaibo Lignum Vitae".

Since it generated some interest,,here is a link
anybody ever make pistol grips?
Page #2 shows a couple of my grips and the case in question. I've also made them for not only this S&W 22,,,but my Ruger Competition Match 22 as well. Looked just like these. That was a trickier gun to make them for with the mag release and various buttons that had to be accounted for. But it worked just fine.
