| | Well here is my first project I completed my first project last night.... Laughing..... I am going to try this again... but on a big piece of wood..... I had a small piece of basswood so I had to alter the pattern a bit to make it all fit...
One question I have is how to make the brim of his cap round? I had no problem with his pom pom... but you can note that the brim of his cap is pretty boxed out...
I really am enjoying carving....lets see how the next one comes out.

| | Re: Well here is my first project ...hmmm...how to make round...
if it is not round enough you just have to keep making small cuts until you get the desired effect. most beginners do not pay enough attention to rounding, but seeing that you've noticed it needs more rounding you're well on your way...
...rounding is like watching a diamond cutter cut a stone, not too quick to cut rather he spends time looking for cuts to make. remember that nothing in real life is truly symmetrical (nor round), so don't be too picky just leave some nice facets behind...
I've attached a picture of a jester i did and you can see the facets on the bells...
...hopes this helps |

| | Re: Well here is my first project Ahhhhhhh, Maggie -- looking good !! That's really nice for a first project.
How to get it round? Just keep looking at it from ALL angles and cut off everything that sticks out past round.
Keep going !! |

| | Re: Well here is my first project Maggie, Your first carving and you are worried about getting the brim of the hat round. WOW! I wish that was all I had to worry about with my first carving. A very generous critic noted to me that my first one had a nose that looked like Mike Tyson flattened it, no ears at all, and wanted to know if the termites ate the eye lids and lips off. Yours is a great first carving. TOM H |

You can try turning a gouge upside down and making careful cuts. Watch the sharp edges of the gouge!! |
