I feel like I'm floundering and could use some guidance. I was hoping to find a carving club within an hour or so of Worcester, MA that meets on anyday but Sunday. I've taken a few local classes, but they tend to focus more on relief carving. I appreciate any help...

Not sure where that's at in MA, but if you go under wci community on the left bar there's a "carver clubs" section, around 2 dozen assorted clubs there of various arts. Google search would work great also, just not sure of nearby citys to you. Goodluck!

+1 to what Hannibal said. You could also ask at a local Wood Craft store (if you have one) if there are any near by.

Ripton.... Most of us started out "Lone Wolves" before we either stumbled upon a club or a mentor. For instance, in my case I carved for years before finding a club. I'd suggest picking one area of carving that really interests you and then buy a couple of books and/or videos. If you're interested in caricature's you're in luck because Gene's video's are available either here on WCI or on YouTube free of charge. There's more subject matter available than you could learn to carve in a year or more. Personally I found that books with pictures and static tutorials were more helpful to me in the beginning because I needed to take things slow. Once I got the hang of things then I could watch the videos. Of course books and videos don't replace one on one interaction but it'll help tide you over until you hook up with a club or another carver.

Ripton... Recommend contacting Connecticut Valley Woodcarving (CT Valley WC) and see if they can make any recommendations. They sell online and at shows all over New England so they may have an idea if there's a club near you. I was in contact with them the last time I went back to Connecticut and they were very helpful. They may in fact be associated with the club that Mitchell suggested you contact.

I belong to the Mystic Carvers club located in Mystic CT. We meet the last Sunday of every month from 11:00 to 2:00. On average about 30 members show up every meeting. Skill level ranges from beginners to masters and professional carvers. Carving styles from caricature carving to carving in the round as well as relief carving. Throughout the year the club brings in Guest professionals for 3 day carving seminars (for an extra fee of course) and every fall there is a 3 day carving retreat. If you are interested make the trip and sit in as a guest. Warren Blessing (who runs the website Connecticut Valley Woodcarving noted above) is the president. |

Ripton, I can sympathize, a quick google gives four clubs in West Virginia, and none are within three hours of where I am! :-( |
