If anyone is having a problem finding carving screws to hold smaller projects they can be homemade using hanger bolts. These bolts have a wood screw on one end and 1/4-20 threads on the other and come in a variety of diameters and lengths. They can be found at most hardware outlets. All you have to do is add a washer and a wing nut and you've got a pretty economical carving screw. 8)

Good thinking Bandaid!

I need to make a stop the the Home Depot tonight so I'll pick up one of those and some carriage bolts and wing nuts so I can build a nice little carving arm this weekend.

Colin,

You're kidding, you're going to be on Tool Box Challenge?? I love that show. How was that? I'll be sure to watch!

Chris

Chris,
The show was a blast it took all day and part of the evening to tape the show. I cant tell you what happened but they teamed me up with a husband and wife team we had so much fun but again I am not a woodworker. Carving is my thing I was told when I tried out for the show that they were thinking of doing a carving show but it never came to be. So me with little or no wordworking experience I was completly lost. If you watch the show they tell me my episode airs 23 June 03 too bad I wont get to see it I am going to Campbell River British Columbia to the 'Shoreline Arts Competition' for a carving competition on the beach for five days from the 23rd to the 30th maybe it will air out there.

AAKKKK! Sorry to hear about the hand. I stuck myself once. I was using a palm skew chisel and it manged to slip off the carving, into my wrist. Fortunately I was wearing my carving glove. Somehow, I still don't know how it happened, the chisel put a small cut in my wrist but the glove remained intact. Strangest thing... No stiches, just a bandaid and lots of blood.
I do love that about carving. The tools are (supposed to be) so sharp and they cut through you like a shard of glass. You don't feel a thing. And better still, the wounds bleed so much that you don't need to worry about an infection

By the way, you people were talking about butcher/fishermans gloves a couple pages back. Allow me to clarify. There is no such thing as 'chain mail.' Lets all say it together THERE IS NO SUCH THING AS 'CHAIN MAIL.' Nor is there 'ring mail' or any other such thing. It's mail, just plain mail. Some/most of the butchers gloves today are welded mail. The only thing stronger than that is a gauntlet, great for swordplay but lousy for carving. Ah, I'm done ranting now.

Get well soon Chris.

Mr. M, no chain mail? Â*hmmmmm
You remind me of a guy from the East coast, he tried to tell me there was no 'R' in Warshington.

There is in the 'other' Washington!!!

As much as I hate wearing a glove I think I'd better learn to like it 'cause the wife presented me with 2 dozen Kevlar gloves. Says they're cheaper than having to buy so many bandaids. Don't even want to look at the credit card bill!

Mr._Munchkin

If you really want to be so specific on terminology, I would have to correct you too. Mail is what the U.S. al service delivers to our homes. Maille ( Chain Mail ) is part of the armor used in medieval time, until plate armor came around, constructed of 16 Ga. galvenized steel.

I think I, like the other may, will continue to say chain mail.
Excuse me if this sound to simple!

Brad
