Good morning all. Can anyone tell me what the deference is between a veiner and a V tool? Thanks. |

dallen, Think the letters of the alphabet "U" and "V". That is pretty much all there is to it. One (supposedly) creates a sharp channel in the wood whereas the other creates a more rounded one. I used the word "supposedly" as not all tools sold as "V" tools have a pointed apex. Also there are varying degrees of the "V". For a more graphic explanation checkout Woodcraft under the Pfiel brand. They have charts that show the different profiles. Also be aware of a little difference in the European and American labeling of gouge sweeps. It is a trifle daunting at first, but you'll soon get the hang of it all if you stick with it. No genius required. L.P.

Dallen... I'm going to show the egg on my face but I've never been to old to learn. Thanks for that explanation. No one had ever explained it to me like that. And if they had or had I been bright enough to ask, I wouldn't be the proud owner of a totally brand new useless Denney 3/16" Veiner!

To me a veiner is a very small #11 gouge but I have seen old timers call a very tiny V tool that as well. Context here I am over 50 so when I say old timers I mean “old timers” with all due respect.

Eddy, LOL... How do you think I figured it out? Got the "T" shirt, the video, and the veiner! It would be really sweet if all the different makers and/or vendors did up a chart like the Pfiel. At least when you buy one of their tools you know what you are getting! Young Mr. Dallen was/is (I hope) out in front a little for asking before buying. L.P.

A big difference between veiners and V-tools is the definite nature of a V-tool cut vs. the easily modified path of a veiner cut. As my instructor puts it "a V-tool commits and a veiner leaves room for adjustment". I prefer 60 degree V-tools (and 45 degree V-tools) over 90 degree version, since they are easier to maneuver in curved cuts. Mike

There is no such thing as a worthless Veiner..What you have is excellent for adding character to Beards.(As a start) Practice cuts and see what it will do. If there is a cutting problem, I will be happy to work it over and return post paid. Cordially Nad .
