I did a search and found a lot of useful discussion about V gouges. My dumb question is if a V gouge and parting tool are the same item? I haven't seen a difinitive explanation that shows any difference between the two. Sorry for starting a new thread if this is explained elsewhere.

I've never heard of a parting tool used in caving. I've only used them in turning and the parting tool I use isn't shaped like a V, it's stright across and has a carbide tip.

Not a dumb question as it confuses many carvers and even us "old timers" have to stop and think about V tools and parting tools, veiners and fluters and flat gouges .........sure does get confusing. To answer your question, Yep they are the same. |

There is a parting tool for wood turning. It is like a skinny wood chisle, aprox. 1/8" wide on the end! I hope this helps. Carl

Blusteel7, From all that I have read and from the consensus of posts here, in wood carving the two terms "V" and "Parting Tool" are used interchangeably. In metal working (I was a machinist for 22 years), and in wood turning the parting tool is another animal altogether. It is another moniker for a "cut-off tool" used on lathes and milling machines. It's function is to remove unnecessary stock after a piece is finished, and that was used during the process for mounting the workpiece in the machine. As my Poppy used to say, "A nod is as good as a wink to a blind horse". L.P.

Thanks for clearing that up for me. I had seen tutorials saying use your parting tool to do this & that and I thought from the looks they were using a V but wasn't sure. I am familiar with the machinist's parting tool. I only have one of the Ramelson starter sets with the small 9/64" V and was thinking I might need a 1/4" to get deeper cuts. I just wasn't sure what to specify in shopping for one.

I have a theory here it is, the term parting tool come over from the machinist and wood shop craftsmen they call it that because the way its used . The term “V” tool came over from the art community and as a member of both I could be wrong.
