Probably nothing, Bill. The amount of umber you put in, the amount of BLO it's put into, will determine how dark it stains the wood. Personally, I'd take a small amount, say a 1/4 cup, and add umber to it 1/8 inch at a time until it gets dark enough (test on scrap wood) Since 1/4 cup is 1/16th of a quart, it's easy to calculate how much umber to put in. For example if it takes 3/8 inch of umber to get the small sample dark enough, multiply 3/8 times 16 (equals 6), so it tells you to get the big bottle as dark as the sample, put a total of 6 inches of umber into it. The reason for using a 1/4 cup sample, is if you get it too dark, you only have to throw away (dispose of safely!) a small amount, not the whole quart. Claude |

To echo Claude's comment, I use the smallest plastic bowl made by Glad. Think it holds about 1/2 cup. To that, I add about a 1" long ribbon of oil paint and stir well. Personally, I use a mixture of raw sienna (2/3") and yellow ocher (1/3") for a base coat on all my carvings. Just my $.02
