Default how to use carver's vice

Please can anyone give some advice for attaching wood to be carved to a drilled 4" faceplate on a carver's vice - model WCV100CLM? Would I secure wood by screwing into wood itself? Thanks!

tina,

hello and welcome to the board,
as far as your question i dont use a vice to often but the way i have seen them attached is to screw the face plate to the wood using wood screws, but i would not use screws to long because they may get into a tool if they are to long.

someone else may be able to help you better, but i think you are on the right track

I use the Lee Valley version with a 3" or 4" plate and yes, use short screws ( 3/4" or so) screwed into the base of the wood you are going to carve and insert the plate into the vice and lock it in. They work great. You can change the position of the work without much trouble, just unlock it and move the position to suit your need and re-tighten.

Another way you can do it if you are just using it to carve, not sure how it would hold up against a mallet on chisels......but screw a piece of wood to the vise, with the screws not protruding thru the surface...put some white glue on the wood, a layer of newspaper, more glue and then your carving....you can pop it off after you are done......some woodturning is done this way on a faceplate

Strong double-stick tape would work as well to attach the blank to the sacrificial wood screwed to the base.

If you haven't roughed out the carving yet, you can also leave extra wood to screw into on the bottom of the carving.
