www.littleshavers.com sells a good starter kit. Best tools out there (in my opinion) www.drakeknives.com. You need a glove, thumb guard, strop and compound besides a good knife and chisels. Good luck!

I've always said you need a sharp knife and sharp wits to carve.

I have the sharp knife.

That kit at little shavers is a good starting point.

Anyway good luck on your carving adventure. I hope it works out for you.

Dan, take a look at Arleen (carverswoodshop) and Gene Mesers videos on youtube, they are excellent. Also Lynns blog. http://www.outwestwoodcarving.blogspot.com/

Dan, you asked what kind of carving you should start with. A better question for us would be "What kind of carving would you like to do? Caricature?, Birds? Fish? Animal Relief, Scenic Relief, Realistic Human Form? Relistic Animal?

There are members here that carve in each of these genre, and can give excellent advice on where to start. There are also some simple "five minute" projects, most of which take an hour or more, but are good projects for beginners.

Here's a page with a few....Woodcarving Illustrated - How To Magazine for Carvers - Search results

Or check Susan's L.S. Irish's site for a free primer on carving. Very thorough and clearly written.

Depending on where you are at, check this list of basic relief carving classes by Fred and Elaine Stenman. Our club has been inviting them to put on a seminar for us for the past 11 years and have had folks from raw beginners to seasoned carvers attrend. Great instructors. Also there are quite a few other instructors around that also put on excellent classes. this is just one I'm familiar with.

when i have a class that are beginners,, it one kn13 flexcut knife, strop, compound, carving glove and thumb guard,, use basswood, and pick either a precut project or simple pattern that you can cut on a bandsaw, but most beginners do not have one,,, a coping saw works fine, have fun,, ohhh a nice cheap tool box is nice to put everything into take care and happy carving, arleen
