You're not rushing a thing! Carve what you want when you want to try it!
Don't be afraid to take too much off, just do it slowly. Fear of taking too much off slows us all down and causes us to spend hours (days) more on a project.
Don't be too hard on yourself; it's wood! If you really screw it up, laugh at yourself and start over with a new piece! If you don't have another piece of basswood or butternut, go out in the yard and pick up a stick. Some of the best carvings were done in found wood!

Thanks, Wade! I'll keep reminding myself it doesn't have to be perfect each and every time. Maybe when I screw one up I'll just carve a couple of eyes in it and call it an interpretive piece?
