Question Tools

Hi everyone,

I'm an amateur woodworker, but like good tools. I have a coupon for 20% off at Woodcraft tomorrow and was wondering what you all thought of Pfeil, Flexcut, vs the powershaft that goes in your drill (comes with bits). I'm going to have to do some leaf and circle type carving in walnut and already threw out just now the cheesy carving tools I had. Otherwise, my shop is stocked with Lie-Neilsen, etc.

I need to go down to Woodcraft in the am and get a set of tools, using my coupon. I'm carving in walnut, and want to spend less than $300.

Please help.

Thanks much.

Hi there,
I love my Pfeil tools. The quality is top notch. You can get quite a selection for the money you are prepared to spend.

If your stocked with Lie-Neilson you must appreciate quality, I would buy the Pfeil. I have a huge set of Flexcut and they are really really great but I like Pfeil even better just not in my budget. With $300 and a 20% off you could get a really nice set up of Pfeil tools that would be awesome. I have used my Flexcut in Black Walnut plenty of times with very satisfactory results, I have also used them in much harder woods. You will lose a little quality buying the Flexcut but for the price difference and the quality that remains it's worth it if you want a larger set of tools, on place where quality over quaintly doesn't have an effect.

I wouldn't bother with the power carver for the drill press, if you want a power carver aka rotary carver just buy one, drill presses are made for drilling anyways.

Personally, I'd go with the Pfeils - I rarely touch the Flexcuts I have anymore... just can't keep an edge on em. Yes they sharpen ok but they are pretty brittle - seem to nick pretty easliy. In my opinion - they really are limited to softer woods. I really don't think you'll be disappointed in the coming years with the Pfeils.
