Tools

I'm really enjoying carving and would like to get a set. All I have been using is the starter set from little shavers.

Does anyone know if these are good or maybe could hook me up with a set around the same price. Woodcarverssupply.com

What are you planning on carving with them is the question that comes to mind. The tools pictured, are in my opinion good, but others will and have differed. Depending on what and how you carve will determine their usefulness. For instance, I now carve mostly smaller items, from 3 X 3 X 10" or so on down to miniatures. Hand held, so those larger tools sit and the smaller palm tools get a workout.

Well mainly 3d and relief carving. The carving I'm working on now is about 8" tall.

Unless you are going to do something substantially larger those tools wouldn't be appropriate. It's best if you figure out some cut that you can't make with your existing tools and just buy the tool that will allow you to make that cut. Buying a set at this point would, imo, be a bad move. That being said, I'm not practicing what I preach. I have literally hundreds of tools and a couple hundred knives. I regularly use the same 6 or 8 tools and the same 2 or 3 knives and that's more than I really need.

Thanks for the input Ed! I will just keep going as is for now. It would be so easy for me to get caught up in the buying of tools seeing that my shop is full of them now. hee hee Always looking for prodjects around the house, boat and truck that would nessesatate buying a tool to get the job done. The only bummer is after 30 years of marraige the wife has caught on.

I buy Flex Cut palm tools as needed for particular jobs. I now have about 12 of them bought mostly individually and I'm carving wood spirits (a couple in the 12 in size) down to minis, I also have a complete set of Dockyards and I LOVE 'em all. I own 2 knives and a skew and I can't see me buying any more carving tools for a long time.
