| | Re: Tool sets? Both are good quality sets, but for different types of carving, or more accurately, different types of wood. Flexcut are wonderful when used on softer woods, like Pine, Basswood, Butternut, Walnut, and soft Mahogany. They have a thin flexable blade and slight spring to them when you use them.
The Pfeil tool set is better for harder woods, Cherry, Maple, hard Mahogany, but can also be sharpened to do a wonderful job on the softer woods too. It all depend on the way they are sharpened, low bevel softer wood, higher bevel, harder wood. Pfeil are not palm tools, they are full sized or European length tools, they have a thicker more rigid blade and are very good quality.
I'd say that of the two sets, the Pfeil are more versatile, in that you can use them for both types of wood, with some re-sharpening work. Both sets are good quality and quite useful, and both will work in relief carving or the round. It really depends on the wood you plan to use.
Hope this is helpful. Good luck.

I agree with Bob that those sets ARE FOR different woods hardness. I use Flexcuts for the softer woods with a few other brands but mainly Flexcuts.
Again, best bet since you are new to the carving world is RICK!
BTW, Welcome to a fantastic board. |

| | Re: Tool sets? The Pfeil "D" set is the shorter, European length tool. Still good, but not the choice of many for mallet tools. They also sell the full size Pfeil sets of 12 toosl on ebay. There are a couple of seller in Canada (and at least one sells through ebay), and they seem to have much better prices than the U.S. dealers. KMS tools is one you might try. A simliar 18 piece intermediate set at Woodcraft is $450. |

i put handls on each of them and like them better with the handls i added
If you are looking for Pfeil check with KMS http://www.kmstools.com/scripts/prod...?64&2%3C-%3E63
another good supplier of tools is http://thewoodcraftshop.com/ I know he carries Henry Taylor and others
also might check with Rick at Little Shavers
he has a great line of tools http://www.littleshavers.com/index.html
another good supplier is up in Canada good prieces enen after the shipping http://www.woodcarvingstore.com/
I would buy from a reputable dealer rather than off EBay
that way if you have any problems the dealer you buy from
will takke care of it
Wood craft does carry some excellent tools but their prices are much higher than other suppliers
I have links saved to quite a few suppliers
will glad to email them to you
just let me know bigwaynep51@aol.com |

| | Re: Tool sets? hey, Lookingforyou
If you are set on getting a set (8-10") you can't beat the Pheil Indertmediate set you mentioned... all of those are very good tools and I , personally, love the shorter (8") length (compared to the 10-12" full size). Yes, there will be a few you will never use ...but at that price it's worth it. If you decide you need some larger tools... then consider the individual Flex mallets or Pheil large tools.
I guarantee you will love the Pheils. The Flexcuts are not quite as durable as far as holding the edge - however, their palm tools definately are very desirable for detail/character carving... but the Pheils hold their own there also...
good luck, rales
