If you order that beginner's carving set, be sure to tell them that you're carving oak walking sticks rather than basswood. Rick normally sharpens the tools for use with basswood. You'll want them a little different to carve oak or other hard woods.

I am not a big fan of (tool sets) I always got tools I never used. Years ago over 30 my sister bought me a sculptor set marpels blue chip 7 tools. I know she paid over $150. I still have the tools in the box they came in. I used them once they were too thick didnt feel like my Henry Taylor tools. I bought a Buck Brothers set myself I dont use them still in the roll they came in. I dont know how else I could have learned what I like without trying. I am not a knife carver but I did start out that way, I recently bought myself a carving jack I will let everyone know if it works for me I want to get back into whittling and I need my knife to portable.

Hello and welcome, Woodsman. It's nice to have you here with us. There is so much to learn here and a lot of great people here to help you. I'm a stick carver, too. You can use a knife to begin with.
