Colin, Even though I made fun of Curtis' first Santa, I cherish it. I can understand why your wife thinks your first one is very special. I have Curtis' under a glass dome and he has a place of honor on our shelf.. lol

Curtis and Charlotte, that first Santa is very nice and I would be proud of it too. It's also a great example of how much our carving changes the more we carve. It gets easier and easier to do things with each piece, change a pose, an expression, add more detail, etc. Thanks for sharing it and also the other photos!
Oh, tell your son that bear is a pretty good first piece also. Callynne

Callynne, Curtis said to thank you for taking up for him. I don't think Curtis had much incintive when he first started to carve. Then a shop owner sold everyone he would bring in for $50.00's a piece. The same lady was buying all of them. When he realized that someone would actually want one of his carvings, he started getting serious about it. I wish we could turn them out like some of you guys do. That Teri really rolls them out. I think you, Nancy and Teri rezlly are on the ball!

Hey you're never to old to start carving. If your having problems with santas then go a different route and try another style.
maybe try spoons they really teach you to "read" the wood grain and you can do what ever you can think of on the handles. Just don't use any of the aromatic woods like cedar, pine, if they are going to be used as serving spoons and not for display only.
basswood, mahogany, walnut all make good spoons and are very carveable.
good luck
