Anyone have any suggestions for adding wood to a piece? I went a little short on a plaque I am working on and I need to cut out a shield like shape. Since I don't have much room on the bottom I've heard you can add wood to a piece and using wood putty and sanding you can cover up the wood seam pretty well. Any suggestions?

It has been my experience that the only way to cover up a seam "pretty well" is with paint. This can be done so that the seam fully disappears. You indicated that this is a plaque, if it is to be a "natural" or stain finish I have had very little luck in covering up the addition. I have used, putty, epoxy and such; but it still requires paint to cover up.

My method is to use a touch of (diluted or not) paint to simulate the wood color and match the lighter side to the darker side. Gilles |

Thanks guys. This is in fact going to be a painted plaque. I figured on the putty and just doing a paint over. The nice thing is I have a rough carved texture so that should help with the seam.

i have added inchs by dowel-pinning & glue but i took a touch and browned the wood [burnt] and touchup pins to add grain &cleared it...it looked pretty well.
