I'd probably start by looking them up on the Internet. Pictures are better than nothing.

Assuming your knife is really, really sharp and the blade size and shape is reasonable, you have everything you need. I have several dozen carving knives, but prefer to use a pocket knife (of which I also have several dozen). My current favorite is a Victorinox Tinker with the small blade modified a bit. Anyway a suitable pocket knife will work just fine. As to a pattern, I'm sure there are some around, but as an alternative go to Google, type in Tiki, select images and you'll get something like a million plus hits. You should find something there you will like.

On vacation years ago I came across a bunch of guys who would do these things while you wait. This one is about 3 1/2 feet tall and sits in my garden watching the gate and who comes and goes. They did them in hundreds of styles up to 6-8 ft tall out of locally grown pines. I figured for the fun of watching them do their thing for the 20 minutes the 35 bucks was well spent.

Work doesn't bother me at all,,,I can watch others do it for hours and it doesn't phase me one bit!
