| | Re: Tavellers Locket Ooh, I'm torn between bocote and bloodwood. Bocote would give me that beautiful grain flowing over the pattern on the top, but bloodwood would be so bold and unique...
Is there anything I need to do specifically to the basic shape of the locket to cater for the hinge? If not, I'd prefer to leave the hinge selection until later in the process so that I can choose one with the locket in mind.
Mark, I'm not entirely sure I know what you mean. Wouldn't that only give me a wooden base with the lid of the compass as the lid of the whole locket? It's the design on the top that makes it what it is though. If you meant case the whole thing in wood, well that's what i'm doing anyway and I'd still need a hinge both ways. Am I missing something? |

| | Re: Tavellers Locket What I meant was if you got one of the compasses,,kept it just as it is but fitted wood "around " it if you will,,the lid and hinge is already on ,,there probably is a catch of some sort,,so just fit the wood to what is already there.
Now these aren't the same thing,,but they are BOTH wooden watches that I carved. Probably similar in size to what you are looking for. One I painted to look like silver with a hand painted face and hands ( 3:06 is the time of the clients birth) And the second is one I left natural including the wood loop on the top,,the painted one is made out of brass wire. On the back is a burned image of a locomotive that was seen on one of his real watches. I just copied the engraving. Then I made the "crystals" out of plexiglass which are curved just like on the real thing. You carve the front or back,,I just burned it. I painted a face,,you just insert a compass.
And the compass point I carved out of Oak. It's a bit bigger I'm sure than what you are looking for,,but It's all I have at hand to show you.But I certainly could have carved it smaller,,this is just what the job called for. |

| | Re: Tavellers Locket Just a thought to ponder over..somewhere I have seen on the wild wonderful net..someone sells those compasses that were placed on the end of the inexpensive survival knives that were popular in the mid 1980's..would that foot the bill for what your looking for??

| | Re: Tavellers Locket Ok, I think I understand. Nice work by the way, they're beautiful. Thing is, I want a wooden hand carved lid not a bronze lid that comes with the pocket watch. Thanks though ^_^

| | Re: Tavellers Locket A soss hinge would work, would take a bit of space, I was thinking along the lines of a barrel hinge? Treeline sells compass inserts... https://www.treelineusa.com/cgi-bin/...compass-insert
as for the hinges...I really suggest you decide on a hinge and design the compass base to accommodate the hinge...you might be very disappointed doing it the other way!

| | Re: Tavellers Locket Ok here is another option for you. It's a presentation box that you can put your compass in. Since you are looking to do it with hardwood this looks like it can be made with minimal effort. you could always chip carve or engrave a design on the box when finished. |
