| | Re: I Surrender--carving In Front Of Tv Guys, just change your thinking a little bit. Wood chips aren't dirt or dirty; they're little pieces of wood, revealed for the first time with a sharp tool. By removing them from their parent piece of wood, you're creating art, not a mess. I'm sure your wife understand. Good luck. Mike |

| | Re: I Surrender--carving In Front Of Tv I have a workshop that is realy neat and I use that for all my carving.
Sometimes chips do find their way upstairs and I or my wife will pick them up. |

| | Re: I Surrender--carving In Front Of Tv I suppose that my definition of "living" in the living room is a little bit different than that which the general culture dictates because just about anything goes there. I do draw the line and I try hard to never do any sanding there in an effort to control dust, but I sure do a LOT of carving there. My custom built coffee table, right in front of the sofa, has a fine vise mounted on it where a lot of chipping takes place although I do place a moveable piece of linolium down to catch most of the shavings. Just in front of the tv I have a beautiful locust shaving horse.
I've spent many years living in log cabins and I guess that getting things done in the house has just become the norm to me. People with plastic covered sofas scare me! |

| | Re: I Surrender--carving In Front Of Tv Dave... I didn't notice the word, "WIFE" spelled out anywhere in your post. If she resides in your humble abode and gives her blessing to your chip catcher then I'd have to place her somewhere in the sainthood line between "Joan of Arc" and Mother Teresa! My lovely is one of the finest women in the world but if I even mumbled the word vise in the same breath as the word livingroom I'd find myself outside sharing the dog house with the dog! Ha! Ha!

| | Re: I Surrender--carving In Front Of Tv My lovely bride lets me carve in the recliner with a big old leather apron on my lap (catches 95 percent) but after Hi Ho's statement I didnt like the mental picture I got with the vise. I can Hardly wait for Forrest's idea's on this.

| | Re: I Surrender--carving In Front Of Tv And I thought I was weird having a vise in the bedroom! Of course the bedroom is one of three in the house and I'm the only one living here. So, I converted the room to my carving room. And the bed is gone! LOL And no carpeting or easy chairs--so no worry except to periodically sweep and vacuum so I don't track too much out into the house--my worse area is right outside the carving room door in the hallway--but of course that's because the kitchen is across from the carving room and the bathroom is right along side the carving room. HEY! I knew what I was doing--priorities: carving, eating, bathroom--and sleeping--one room down the hall!! Don't get no better than this!!LOL
P.S. TV's behind me when I carve--forces me to listen so I don't cut myself! But then I listen to one of the cable music channels--mostly 70's and 80's music.
