Default I Surrender--carving In Front Of Tv

I seen an article in WCI I fellow showed a cheap shot apron, cut out the seam and put in plastic tubing 3/8 " in order to wear so that he can carve and watch t.v., seemed like a great idea, and have more time in the late evening, the tubing keeps the apron open to catch the chips, can't seem to get it to stay open for one....tried just a towel, and maybe I am just a messer person, but wife not happy with the little chips of wood all over the couch and floor....any offer any "how to"....tks in advance.....Dennis

p.s. glad to see forum back up and running!....surely missed it!

Dennis.... My wife won't even let me near the couch. I have to stay in the den and whittle over an 18-gal trash can. Even then I end up picking up chips off the floor. Heaven help me if I track any around the house! I'm not sure that there is a sure fire way to carve withour making at least some kind of mess! Good luck!

You guys married the wrong woman. I've been carving in the basement since I started a few months ago. I'm gonna have a hip replaced in 3 weeks so the kids came last weekend and moved my computer up to the spare room cause I won't be able to do stairs for a while, and, I have permission to carve in here when I feel up to it, and my little bride of 54 years said she'll clean up the chips for me when I make a mess. WHOOPPEE, life is good.

Hi
When i carve in my recliner in front of rhe tv I gota lid from a large plastic tote and placed it on my lap. then i have a apron and let the end hang over the tote. to funnel the chips into the tote. Can catch about 95% of the chips

Have a nice day LeeCool

I wear one of my husbands jean like aprons. I sit in the recliner with the apron spread out. Then I promise all the dogs they will loose thier tails if they so much as think about jumping up into my lap. THEN I'm off into my own little world carving away. When I'm done I just roll up the apron bottom up to my chest and walk to the trash can. I slowly let everything loose and it all falls into the can. I've been known to walk to the edge of the woods and shake it all the chips off there too.

We've a 4month old Dalmatian pup who could well land up with an odd shaped nose. He's determined to look close up as I carve. As for chips I'm messy, and seem to spend more time cleaning up than carving.

I lay out a bed sheet, then set on it and i also use a bbq apron with the big pockets separated, but i fed a safety wire into the top front of hem on the pockets it stands out and catches most the chips, the wire is plyable so it dont get into the way..
the sheet can be picked up and dumped into the flower beds....

when i first started carving it was around xmas and someone got one of those boxes with two wine bottles in it. I appropriated the box, and still use it. Of course Im doing little things. It is wood, so if something slips, it just bangs into the wood and no harm. (vs plastic or metal) It has lasted many years, and it catches 98 percent of the chips. It is small, portable, holds several gouges, knives etc.
so, go to the store, buy some gift wine, drink it or toss it out depending on your wishes and use the wooden box for carving!

It measures 13" by 7" and is about 4" deep. About the same size as a shoe box.

I use it to store current projects tools i use all the time and when it get too full of chips, I open the back door, take the tools out, and toss the chips on the rose bushes.
