Sorry Bill no advice here because I am not a relief carver, but I think it looks great! Well done! I will give it a try one of these days.

Hey Bill,
I'm posting this to the thread because I think that it'll help everyone that is learning to carve this kind of subject in relief.

First off, how big is it and how deep did you carve it?

I like what you've done with the texture of the mountains. The major issue in this carving is perspective, and to help explain it, I've drawn some lines on your picture.

I placed the blue line were the horizon line looked to be. The horizon line is not always were the sky meets the ground. It can be any were in a design. The perspective points or vanishing points (the green dots) are always on the horizon line. Based on your carving I've put them were I thought they should be. The perspective points are were the lines of a 3D object like your church converge. This is the most important thing to do to get depth in a 2D drawing or relief carving. Each horizontal line of the church should line up with one of the perspective points. Take a look at the red and purple lines. The lines of all the walls that face that face left should line up with the purple lines, and the walls facing right should line up with the red lines.

Things to watch out for:
The corners of the eves should line up with the perspective point. (See the bottom purple line.)
The bottom edge of the corner of the far eve should line up with the proper perspective point. The yellow arrow points to the area that I'm talking about.

You can see that the line of the ridge of the roof runs up as it travels to the edge of the carving, when it should be running down to the perspective point. This is the worst mistake in the perspective.

Couple of other things I suggest is round the edges of the mountains and the trees some more. See the light/white areas that I marked on the picture. I also wouldn't have put that many sprigs of grass in the foreground. The number isn't the problem here, it's the fact that they seem to regular. By leaving a few of them out, or if you'd arranged them differently, I think that they would look better.

It looks to me from the picture that this is a much cleaner carving than your last two reliefs. Not bad for your first pictorial relief, keep working at it, and I suggest that you read up on perspective. Once you understand that, it will make things easier.

And one last thing, Never assume that the perspective in a pattern is correct, no matter who drew it.
