Default Suggestions on Tool Buying ....

I'm getting back into carving and I have already purchased 2 knives from Rick at Little Shavers and protective glue, etc.

Now I'm looking to buy some additional tools.

I'm interested in carving holiday stuff (santas, snowmen, etc.), eggheads, caricatures, just whatever catches my eye.

I'm looking at the following tools:

1/4" 60 degree v-parting tool
3/16" 60 degree v-parting tool
5/16" Gouge
3/8" #3 Gouge
3/4" #3 Gouge
5/8" #5 Gouge
3/8" #5 Gouge
1/4" #9 Gouge

And maybe a set of Dockyard Micro Gouges.

Would these sizes handle most carvings and what brands should I consider?

Thanks.

Some people in my carving class say not to buy sets (most of the time), because half of the knives you won't use.
