I hear ya Tom, I stole my wife's cheese grater, that wasn't smart either. I tried to tell her I was just trying to sharpen it, needless to say, she didn't buy that story.

I know Harley Refsal favors the powdered stuff. Been thinking about ordering some from here.
I grind up enough White Gold to last more then a year, takes only 5-10 minutes. I gave away a bunch in November to guys in my carving group to try, they loved it!

Sorry for not replying I was at a family reunion all week so I just got back. Thanks for all of the great info and now after reading all of this it seems that if you can get it on a strop it will work even a sautee'd bucket of worms. Although I think I'll just stick with flexcut gold since it has done such a great job. Again thank you all for your time!

I use red jewellers compound on my leather strop for all my knives.I bought a tube of it in 1975 and still have some left. You don't need much. Every year or so put more on your strop. Works like a charm

I have and have used white, red, green (in several incarnations), gray, gold, the Tormack paste, and the powdered al-ox. My grandfather was fond of saying that "a nod is as good as a wink to a blind horse". I've used them on a hard cloth wheel, leather belts on belt sanders, leather hand strops, cardboard hand strops, the leather power strop wheels, and the leather wheel on the Tomz.

I favor the Tomz and paste compound as it is quick and there is no chance of burning something. I set it up at the end of each project and make sure all of my tools are ready for the next one. For touch-ups during a project I like either the cloth wheel or the leather belt on the sander with the red compound.

The green and the gold are about the same to me, and the white slightly more aggressive. I hardly ever use the powdered stuff after finding out I'm allergic to it. In the big picture I really think that any of them are good and the differences are very subtle.

For travel I use the hand strop and the flexcut slip strop with either green or gold whichever gets into my hand first.
