Hello everyone I would like to know what compound to use on my strop to keep my knives sharp. I'm running out of Flexcut Gold compound that came with a set and I didn't know whether to buy more of that or to get a different brand or type. All responses appreciated! Thanks! |

I use the Flexcut gold, but I am anxious to see what advise others give you.

Cooper, Personally I like the Tormek PA-70 honing compound. It comes in a tube, and applys sort of like toothpaste. Tom |

I am partial to the chromium/aluminum oxide (green) sold by Lee Valley.

My apologies in advance - I am not really trying to hijack this thread. Has anyone tried both the Tormek paste and chromium/aluminum oxide (green)? If so, I would be interested in hearing your thoughts/experiences with them. Currently I am using white gold and it seems okay, but perhaps there is something better.

I have a brick of the chromium green honing compound. Five years of generous use with most satisfactory results. I estimate there's enough left to last 350-400 years.

White Gold, Yellow Stone, Cape Forge liquid compound. I like Blue Velvet but I don't care for the way that it sticks to my strop, it tends to flake off as I strop. Dave |

On my flat strop and Worksharp stropping disk--None: cowhide has natural abrasives that remove metal very nicely with no build-up and, most importantly, no waxes or oils to blacken and transfer. to the wood. Flexcut Gold on my slipstrops, some of which are not cowhide, but a rubbery fake leather from a cheap belt, which I use for thin or 'sharp' slipstrops such as for vieners or V tools because it's stiffer than cowhide. |
